393 MARTHA WILSON HOLMAN (Elizabeth4 Wilson, Martha3 Willcockson, Isaac2, ) b. 3 Aug., 1804, Woodford Co., Ky., and moved with her parents in 1808 to Tenn., where she married her cousin, James Sanders Holman, b. 7 Feb., 1804, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; d. 1867, Bryan, Texas, son of Isaac and Anne (Wigglesworth) Holman. In the Fall of 1835, he received land in Texas as is certified in Headright Certificate No. 212 for one-third league of land issued to him in 1838 by the Board of Land Commissioners for Harrisburg County (now Harris County, of which Houston is the county seat.) He is sometimes called "one of the Founders of Houston, Texas" and figured prominently in Texas politics from 1853 until his death. The Houston Post, 11 May, 1958, included an article entitled "Holman Was First Mayor." Herein are given some records to prove that J. Sanders Holman was the first Mayor of Houston, Texas, elected 14 Aug., 1837 and took office 14 days later. Some historians have stated he was second Mayor, or only Clerk of the County. The recent proof was established by Dr. Andrew Forest Muir, on a Guggenheim Fellowship to write the biography of William Marsh Rice, founder of the Rice Institute. Mrs, Holman died 17 Aug., 1879 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Texas.
